just phone him and talk to him over the phone, that way its not face-to-face, however he will be alone so its more personal

Look, i think a guy should treat you with respect and care whenever you re around him, be it alone or with his friends. If he;'s not doing that, he's not worth your time.
He will always want to be with you, introduce you too his mates. They will make fun of you, cause they want to make him look funny (its like saying, is THAT you funny gf??? lol, but not really)

thats just how guys are...but usually when a guy likes you, you can still tell when he is around his mates...they all pitch in on making fun of you...or try and become your friend...its usually how it happens.
Ask him when your alone how he feels about you or whatever you want to know.
Maybe he's insecure and doesn't want his friends to know about his soft side.
He doesn't want anyone else to know about his feelings towards you.
